History of Bensalem

The township of Bensalem is almost as old as Pennsylvania itself, having been founded in 1692. The town was named after the Semitic word for peace, “Salem,” though it is still argued how the prefix “Ben-” was added and when. Many Dutch, English, and Swedish colonists came to Bensalem in the 1600s and 1700s and influenced the culture around the town. Most of the mansions built in Bensalem were built between 1700 and 1800, and two of them can still be rented out for events. Bensalem hosts Civil War reenactments on the last weekend of April each year in Neshaminy State Park. It brings in over 20,000 people a year, making it the largest free event of this kind on the East Coast.
